SimplyMaya – Digital Sets – The Complete Yeti Project
In this complete project we'll cover modeling and texturing the Furry Yeti character and the winter scene he's in, as well as some post processing techniques of our final render in Photoshop.
We start off by setting up image planes for the Yeti character and sculpting with NURBS primitives we create the basic shapes for the head and the body which we then convert to polygons and connect together with booleans operations. We then use split poly tool to clean up after this and get quaded geometry, extrude to create the additional shapes like the ears, hands and feet, and take a look at face normals and how to get them pointing the right way on your geometry. When we have all our shapes nicely created we clean up the geometry and cut out unnecessary geometry before we move on to creating the complete set.
For this part of the tutorial we build a cave using polygons and working with the sculpt geometry tool pushing and pulling. We also model the trees to get a distorted look and create some rocks which we smooth to get nicely rounded shapes.
When the modeling of the character and the set is complete we add some lights before we start with the UV layout and texturing of the Yeti. During this process you'll learn how to texture paint skin and get good color variation in the texture using Photoshop, we also create his fur coat with Maya Fur which will give you a good introduction to how this feature works.
Finally we texture the complete set to create snow and ice on different layers of our geometry to get the cool winter like feel, adding bump maps to get some realistic cracks and irregularities on these surfaces. We also add a spec map to control where the highlights will occur on the ice and snow. Our final render we take into Photoshop for some post processing and work with different adjustment layers and filters to create an aged and scratched digital illustration based on our complete set model.
