How to Render Matte Surfaces, Volumes 1 - 3

Vol 1: Shading Planar Surfaces
On this first of three DVDs in the Matte Surface rendering series, Scott shares with you the shading techniques he has been teaching for over a decade. Scott covers the necessary tools and materials, explaining how to use them. Next he explains and demonstrates the basics of how our brains interpret form via value changes. Scott uses observational video clips of a box in various lighting scenarios to reinforce his value assignment strategy. Walking you through several sketches, he shows his techniques for properly constructing the cast shadows of planar forms. The rendering examples demonstrate the use of pencil, chalk and marker.

Vol 2: Shading Round Geometric Surfaces
On this second of three DVDs in the Matte Surface rendering series, Scott shares with you the round geoform shading techniques he has been teaching for over a decade. He explains and demonstrates the basics of how our brains interpret round forms via value changes. Scott uses observational video clips of a cylinder, cone and sphere in various lighting scenarios to reinforce his value assignment strategy. Walking you through several sketches, he shows his techniques for properly constructing the cast shadows of each of the round geoforms. At the end of the DVD, Scott renders a more complex form (shown on the cover) from start to finish, demonstrating the use of pencil, chalk and marker.

Vol 3: Shading Complex Curved Surfaces
On this last of three DVDs in the Matte Surface rendering series, Scott shares with you the complex curved surface shading techniques he has been teaching for over a decade. He explains a logical and technical approach to assigning values to simple curved panels. Using Nupastel chalk and Vertithin-Prismacolor pencils, he shows various lighting strategies you can use to light and render complex curved surfaces of your own design. The curved surface examples increase in complexity by the end of the DVD, when the cover piece is rendered from start to finish. Finally, Scott demonstrates several quick vehicle value sketches, employing all of the knowledge learned from this series.

Industrial Design Rendering - Bicycle
On this DVD Scott walks you through the industrial design rendering techniques that he employs within Adobe Photoshop®. He quickly demonstrates draft view sketching before scanning one of the sketches that will be rendered to a photo-real level. During the rendering of a bicycle, Scott discusses basic lighting and reflection strategies to indicate a variety of materials and colors. Watch along, and by the end of the DVD, you will see all of steps taken in Adobe Photoshop® to transform the initial loose sketch into a very real looking object.
